The tl;dr on this is that I'm opening a broad community discussion on how we can, collectively through improved communication, better bring together our established contributors with casual and prospective contributors who struggle to find successful patterns of contribution, so that we might all support each other in order to benefit OpenStack as a whole. Read on for details... OpenStack's TC has requested that foundation staff, when in conversation with representatives of member organizations, encourage participation in the project and collect feedback on any related challenges those organizations encounter in their attempts to do so. In order to better understand the feedback and brainstorm achievable recommendations for the broader community[*], Community Managers on the foundation staff started to work with a small focus group of established contributors with a solid understanding of what successful patterns of contribution look like. It also came to light that established contributors experience many of the same sorts of challenges, even more so if they don't have the luxury of focusing full-time upstream, and so success often comes down to knowing how to effectively navigate those challenges. The community's goal with this exercise is to improve everyone's experience, and your help is needed to do that! The most common themes reported by those struggling to contribute are not related to tooling or workflow confusion, but instead seem to come down to basic communication challenges. Ideas so far to address these gaps include: * Review bandwidth - Ensure contributors and companies understand the importance and benefits of code review - Incentivize and credit meaningful "+1" reviews more - Understand that the volume of changes and limited reviewer bandwidth often means proposals aren't reviewed quickly (or at all), and their proponents may need some additional tenacity and engagement with the team to get their work noticed - Utilize "review dashboards" as a way to find stale changes which have fallen through the cracks * Review strategy and etiquette - Be clear about the meaning of votes on changes, especially negative ones, and set explicit timelines for things like "procedural -2" or WIP blocks when their approval needs to be delayed - Focus on comments and requests that affect whether or not the change can be merged after the fixes are submitted, rather than requesting trivial adjustments to an unsuitable change which has more fundamental problems - Reciprocate with reviews of changes from new reviewers you see leaving insubstantial reviews, demonstrating to them what deeper and more meaningful reviewing looks like * Mentoring newcomers - Established contributors with sufficient bandwidth can help mentoring newcomers, potential core reviewers and new leaders - Mentoring can happen as part of internship programs as well as by helping newcomers determined to become active contributors; both ways should be embraced and utilized What challenges are you facing? And, how would you improve them? Two weeks from now, we'll have a forum session at the OpenInfra Summit Asia in Suwon[**] where our community can refine these possible approaches and integrate others, as well as bring attention to them and promote their application. I've also proposed a similar forum session for OpenInfra Days North America in Indianapolis a month after that, where we can hopefully continue this conversation. The goal for this multi-stage effort is to improve the contribution experience for established participants, casual contributors and newcomers alike. While it's easy to jump to blaming in these situations, it will be far more productive if we can focus on the challenges and experiences that we would each like to remove or improve for ourselves and others in our community. As we find ways together to improve our efficiency, we can reduce the load on all contributors and lower the barriers for people to join and participate. Fwd: DPDK+OVS with OpenStack

Looking for someone who knows OpenStack with OpenVSwitch, and in addition to that, DPDK with OpenStack and OVS.I am using OpenStack Queens, with OpenVSwitch. The architecture I am using is documented here: https://docs.openstack.org/neutron/queens/admin/deploy-ovs-provider.htmlThe OVS I am using on the Compute Node, is compiled with DPDK, and I have enabled the datapath to netdev (DPDK) on br-prv (provider network bridge), and br-tun (tunneling bridge). But these two bridges, br-tun and br-prv, are patched into another OpenStack bridge, called br-int. I wasn’t actually sure about whether to tinker with this bridge, and wondered what datapath it was using.Then, I realized there is a parameter in the openvswitch_agent.ini file, which I will list here: # OVS datapath to use. 'system' is the default value and corresponds to the # kernel datapath. To enable the userspace datapath set this value to 'netdev'. # (string value) # Possible values: # system - <No description provided> # netdev - <No description provided> #datapath_type = system datapath_type = netdev So in tinkering with this, what I realized, is that when you set this datapath_type to system or netdev, it will adjust the br-int bridge to that datapath type.So here is my question. How can I launch a non-DPDK VM, if all of the bridges are using the netdev datapath type?Here is another question. What if one of the flavors don’t have the largepages property set on them? I assumed OpenStack would revert to a system datapath and not use DPDK for those VM interfaces. Well, I found out in testing, that is not the case. If you set all your bridges up for netdev, and you don’t set the property on the Flavor of the VM (largepages), the VM will launch, but it simply won’t work.Is there no way, on a specific Compute Host, to support both DPDK (netdev datapaths) and non-DPDK (system datapaths)?Either on a VM interface level (VM has one interface that is netdev DPDK and another that is system datapath non-DPDK)?Or on a VM by VM basis (VM 1 has 1 or more netdev datapath interfaces and VM 2 has 1 or more system datapath interfaces)?Am I right here? Once you set up a Compute Host for DPDK, it’s DPDK or nothing on that Compute Host? (edited)

Hi....as far I understand ovs does support dpdk compute to be deployed. May I know how to config dpdk compute in OVN networking openstack? Hope someone could help what is the config to be done.... Currently compute is run without dpdk over openstack train ovn based. [oslo] python-consul2 is unmaintained

Hello, I recently noticed that python-consul2 library[1], which is used by the consul coordination driver in tooz, hasn't been updated for 3+ years. Looking at issues in the project, there is an indication that the library is not compatible with ACL API in consul >= 1.11[2]. There is another fork created[3] and this includes fixes to support new API endpoints. Although the driver in tooz does not directly use the feature, I think it's better to discuss our plan to mitigate risks caused by the unmaintained library. As far as I can think of, there are three options now 1. Deprecate consul driver and remove it 2. Keep using python-consul2 now. At least basic functionality is proven to work by our functional tests (Note that the tests do not cover all configuration patterns) 3. Replace python-consul2 by py-consul Before we start the overall discussions I'd like to ask a few questions to the wider audience, as our inputs. - Is anyone using the consul coordination driver now ? - Does anyone have experience with python-consul2 and/or py-consul ? Note that this discussion affects the http messaging driver[4] currently proposed, because it also requires client library to communicate with Consul. Actually I noticed the situation when I noticed that the requirement check job is failing because the library is not part of global requirements list... Hello Glance users, The Glance project team wants to determine whether anyone is using the glance-scrubber utility [0]. If not, we are thinking of deprecating it this cycle to be removed in the appropriate future cycle. If you have not previously heard of the glance-scrubber, that's most likely because it's only useful for particular deployment configurations of which yours is not one. See the doc [0] for details if you are curious. Our suspicion is that the glance-scrubber may have outlived its usefulness for modern OpenStack configurations. (The last time I remember it being discussed at a PTG was during the snowstorm in Dublin, which I believe was the Rocky development cycle). On the other hand, the team also has some ideas for improving the scrubber, but there's no point doing that if it's not actually being used in the first place. So if removal of the glance-scrubber would negatively affect you, please respond to this email so we can get some data points. Thanks! [cinder][kubernetes] pvc stuck in reserved state

Hi, we have a couple of k8s clusters in our openstack environment (Victoria) and are facing some problems when pods get moved to different worker nodes. The PVCs get stuck in "reserved" state, and they only get attached after resetting the volumes to "available" state. First I thought it was due to the missing multiattach volume type which seems to work fine in our customer's cluster. I also found the "duplicate connector" error messages in the nova-compute.log: > Unable to update attachment.(Invalid volume: duplicate connectors > detected on volume But after adding the multiattach volume type and retyping the affected volumes, the PVCs still get stuck in "reserved" state while I don't see any error messages on the hypervisors anymore. So it seems that something has changed/improved, but now I don't have a trace where to look next. Could this be a cinder-csi driver issue or something? Our cinder backend is ceph (Pacific). Not sure which information could help so please ask for anything I can provide. Any pointers are highly appreciated! Thanks! Eugen

[ironic] Having issue with deploying ISO image to node

Hi all, I am trying to play around with ironic, and I am having an issue with deploying an Ubuntu 20.04 ISO image onto my bare metal node. Since I am quite new to bare metal, I am not entirely sure what went wrong as I couldn't find any error messages shown on my log file (ironic-conductor, ironic-api, ironic_neutron_agent, and nova-compute-ironic). This might be my guess; the ironic inspection is hitting timeout, which is causing the deployment to timeout. However, I have no idea why the inspection is failing at timeout. Any help would be appreciated. Best, James

Folks, I have a ceph cluster and recently I configured rbd-mirror to replicate all data to remove ceph cluster for disaster recovery. Yesterday for POC we did a hard cutover on ceph and point openstack to the new cluster. Kolla Ansible on Ubuntu 20.04 - cloud-init & other network issues

Hi, I'm attempting to use Kolla Ansible 14.6.0 to deploy OpenStack Yoga on a small 3-node Ubuntu 20.04 cluster. The nodes have 128 GB RAM each, dual Xeon processors, and dual 10G Intel NICs. The NICs are connected to access ports on a 10G switch with separate VLANs for the local and external networks. All the playbooks run cleanly, but cloud-init is failing in the Ubuntu 20.04 and 22.04 VMs I attempt to boot. The VM images are unmodified from https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/, and cloud-init works fine if I mount a second volume with user-data. The error is a timeout attempting to reach 169.254.169.254. This occurs both when booting a VM in an internal routed network and directly in an external network. I tried various neutron plugin agents (ovn, linuxbridge, and openvswitch both with and without firewall_driver = openvswitch <https://docs.openstack.org/kolla-ansible/latest/reference/networking/neutro…>) first with a clean install of the entire OS each time, all with the same result. Running tcpdump looking for 169.254.169.254 shows nothing. As a possible clue, the virtual NICs are unable to pass any traffic (e.g., to reach an external DHCP server) unless I completely disable port security on the interface (even if the associated security group is wide open). But disabling port security does not fix cloud-init (not to mention I don't really want to disable port security). Are there any additional requirements related to deploying OpenStack with Kolla on Ubuntu 20.04? This is a fairly vanilla configuration using the multinode inventory as a starting point. I tried to follow the Quick Start <https://docs.openstack.org/kolla-ansible/yoga/user/quickstart.html> as closely as possible; the only material difference I see is that I'm using the same 3 nodes for control + compute. I am using MAAS so it's easy to get a clean OS install on all three nodes ahead of each attempt. I plan to try again with the standard (non-HWE) kernel just in case, but otherwise I am running out of ideas. Hi, A number of project still don't have support for SQLAlchemy 2.x, which is currently in Debian testing/unstable, and which will be the version in Debian 13 (aka: Trixie). If these project don't get quickly support for SQLAlchemy 2.x, they are going to drop (well, in fact, they were already kicked out of Debian Testing). Are these project still maintained? Hi Mohammed, We struggled using virt-v2v directly with OpenStack. Our approach was using ovftool to export the VM as OVA and then create a qcow2 image that we can import in OpenStack. So many manual steps involved. So I tested your tool aganst vsphere 7.x vcenter. But I just can't manage to get it working. It keeps complaining about the path of the source VM. Hi all, another one here that can't seem to get kolla running with letsencrypt certs, just curious as to what settings are required for kolla to pull internal/external/backend certs from letsencrypt? I've looked at the docs and have tried a few settings but keep getting errors, sure i had this working last week before i tore it down ready to deploy for production and now i just cant get it to complete the deployment because of certs, only thing i can think of is i need to run kolla-ansible -i multinode certificates but i thought that was just for self made certs? Also, what are best practices for backend tls certs, self signed or using the internal cert etc?? Is it possible to use letsencrypt at all for backend? Cheers all

[cinder] Offering local storage using the device mapper clone target

Hello cinder team and other interested parties, I have recently started thinking about ways to offer local storage as part of the OpenStack block storage service. Naturally any solution would require to transparently migrate volumes to and with the instances they are attached to, so that the user experience of being able to access their storage from anywhere would not be degraded. Fortunately, with the device mapper clone target ([1]), a mechanism is available in the linux kernel which allows to do exactly that: Create copies of devices (even network attached ones) while allowing to immediately use the target device. I have detailed the motivation and some implications of having local storage in the block storage service in a blog post [2], which I do not want to repeat here in order to not make this mail longer than it needs to be. The blog post also outlines a way to implement a cinder driver leveraging this mechanism, which is loosely based on the way cinder migrates volumes between backends, i.e.: When a volume is going to be attached, a new volume is created on the instance's host, which is backed by a device mapper clone target with the original volume as its source; Then the volume objects are switched and a local connector is returned, which may be used immediately. Since then I went ahead and created a proof of concept cinder driver ([3]), which roughly follows what is outlined in the post (some lessons were already learned during implementation). The driver is based on the in-tree lvm driver for basic volume management and can do basic things like create/delete, attach/detach and also handles live migration and rebuilding of instances. There is nothing currently regarding snapshots and volume migrations will definitly not work as expected yet, but it should be sufficient to get a feeling for the general idea. I am currently looking for feedback on the idea and the implementation and would like to know if this is of interest to others. I am happpy to answer any questions or present this in more detail. In case anyone wants to take the driver for a spin I am going to leave some instructions on how to set up the environment in [4]. Hi All, You might have seen some fixes and testing changes on your project to test the oslo.policy 4.4.0. oslo.policy 4.4.0 enables the RBAC new defaults by default, which means those will be enabled for all the OpenStack services unless they have disabled them by overriding the default value. It enables both enforce_scope as well enforce_new_defaults. The requirement change[1] adds the oslo.policy 4.4.0 in upper-constraints which will enable the latest oslo.policy in upstream CI. Along with jobs failing on requirement change, I tested more integration jobs and fixing the failures[2]. Most of the fixes have been merged, and a few of them are up for review. Can not work on Dashboard(throwing 504-Timed out) on Openestack-on-ansible environment

Hi Team , We have an 'Openstack on Ansible' Private cloud environment with 3 controllers & 35 Compute host nodes. Age of this environment is around 4 yrs. DISTRIB_RELEASE: 21.2.1 DISTRIB_CODENAME: Ussuri DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION: Openstack-Ansible Top of this Linux containers are there where the services are running inside such as neutron, galera, horizon, keystone, etcd, nova-api, utility etc for all 3 controllers. Current Set Up: We find in haproxy config file only controller2 & controller3 are configured. So the galera container along with Mariadb Services are running fine within controller2(Primary) & controller3. But Galera container in controller1 is stopped & mariadb service not running here. Issue Started with: All of suddent we faced, user not able to log in dashboard 5 days back. The dashboard page is not getting loaded. Action Taken: We find Maria-DB in controller2 is non-primary & DB on controller-3 is down. Made Maria-DB in controller2 primary & DB on controller-3 up which resulted to load the page & log in. Current Issue: 1) But the Dashboard page is too slow to work. Sometime throwing 504-Timed out error 2) VM Console(VNC) not working for any VM 3) NOt able to create any VM(Showing 'Scheduling' continuously) 4) 25/35 Hypervisons are showing down in Dashboard within 'Hypervisor list' tab but those are up as per CLI 5) Not able to create any volume Request you to go through the Problem description & Can anybody help me out providing the solution for the same? This is feature freeze week and we managed to get a lot done, but during this week's IRC meeting we talked about the features we are working on, and would likely need a couple more days to be merged. They are: [1] NetApp SnapLock support This feature will allow users to create WORM shares and OpenStack operators to configure retention policy for the manila shares while using the NetApp ONTAP driver. This is a feature targeting a single driver. [2] [NetApp] Custom storage efficiency policy support for Manila share This feature is also constrained to the NetApp ONTAP driver. It will allow configuring custom efficiency policies using Manila. The change is not very numerous in terms of lines of code and has received some reviews. The author needs some more time to hash out some implementation details. [3] Export Location Metadata This is a feature that introduces the possibility of adding metadata to export locations. The generic metadata mechanism is being used, and it is thoroughly tested in manila-tempest-plugin. This change has received reviews and the author has been responsive. The author needs some time to figure out some unit test failures. [4] Ensure shares API An API change that will allow OpenStack operators to start the process that recalculates the export location of their shares, which is currently only done during the service restart. Reviews have been provided, but we would also like some more time for some more testing and more reviews. [5] Add json and yaml formatting to manila-manage This is an RFE. Doesn't introduce any APIs, and will allow OpenStack operators to specify the output format in the `manila-manage service list` command, which is useful for automations consuming this feature. I would like to grant a feature freeze exception for the three features mentioned and they should be merged by next Thursday (September 5th). Hello Everyone, We are having issue deploying Ironic baremental image to compute using Ironic(Yoga). The Baremetal machine is enrolled using Redfish driver. It goes to Available state as well. Once we attempt to deploy it the following exception is thrown. Error: Detected change in error condition on node “BMNode1”. Deploy step deploy.deploy failed: Redfish exception occurred. Error: Setting boot mode to uefi failed for node <UUID>. Error: HTTP PATCH http://IP/redfish/v1/Systems/1 returned code 400. Base.v1_10_3.GeneralError: The service detected a malformed request body that it was unable to interpret. Development Focus ----------------- We just passed feature freeze! Until release branches are cut, you should stop accepting featureful changes to deliverables following the cycle-with-rc release model, or to libraries. Exceptions should be discussed on separate threads on the mailing-list, and feature freeze exceptions approved by the team's PTL. Focus should be on finding and fixing release-critical bugs, so that release candidates and final versions of the 2024.2 Dalmatian deliverables can be proposed, well ahead of the final 2024.2 Dalmatian release date. General Information ------------------- We are still finishing up processing a few release requests, but the 2024.2 Dalmatian release requirements are now frozen. If new library releases are needed to fix release-critical bugs in 2024.2 Dalmatian, you must request a Requirements Freeze Exception (RFE) from the requirements team before we can do a new release to avoid having something released in 2024.2 Dalmatian that is not actually usable. This is done by posting to the openstack-discuss mailing list with a subject line similar to: [$PROJECT][requirements] RFE requested for $PROJECT_LIB Include justification/reasoning for why a RFE is needed for this lib. If/when the requirements team OKs the post-freeze update, we can then process a new release. A soft String freeze is now in effect, in order to let the I18N team do the translation work in good conditions. In Horizon and the various dashboard plugins, you should stop accepting changes that modify user-visible strings. Exceptions should be discussed on the mailing-list. By September 26th, 2024 this will become a hard string freeze, with no changes in user-visible strings allowed. Actions ------- stable/2024.2 branches should be created soon for all not-already-branched libraries. You should expect 2-3 changes to be proposed for each: a .gitreview update, a reno update (skipped for projects not using reno), and a tox.ini constraints URL update. Please review those in priority so that the branch can be functional ASAP. The Prelude section of reno release notes is rendered as the top level overview for the release. Any important overall messaging for 2024.2 Dalmatian changes should be added there to make sure the consumers of your release notes see them. kolla openstack and ceph cephadm compatible?

Hello, I am faced with an issue where I can't run kolla-ansible prechecks against one of the system and the only thing unique about this system is that its the one I used to bootstrap ceph, hence have cephadm installed. It makes me assume that the two might be incompatible. Ceph is using a system account called cephuser and kolla is using an system account called kolla, so I am lost why they are stumping on each other. Granted, both have full sudo, so that could be the route where this mess came up. The three systems are both execution machine and storage machine. When I initially set it up, I made assumptions that cinder was part of the core service. I then struggled to bring up the virtual machine and its while debugging this issue that I realized I need cinder. Fine, I enabled cinder on /etc/kolla/globals.d/cinder.yml as documented, but now I can't run prechecks. This was failing only on cinder. When I run deploy, now its failing on glance too. Have anyone noticed something similar? Can it be fixed without reinstalling all the systems? [swift] Sync rings automatically

The familiar process for ring modification is: 1/ Create or amend corresponding builder file 2/ Rebalance it 3/ (R)sync the newly modified ring to all hosts in the cluster Recently I was wondering about removing the need for 3/. A very simple minded approach would be to make a cron job on each host to periodically rsync from one of the proxies (designated as the 'master' where we modify rings).. However, I then decided that it would be nicer to make a new Swift daemon and add it to the code. I have coded this up (I'm looking at adding a patch to Swift's Gerrit but thought I'd mention it here first). the basic design is: - New daemon swift-ring-syncer - Backend code in common/ring_syncer.py - Conf file ring-syncer.conf One host is designated the authoritative source (config 'ringbuilder'). All hosts can run this daemon (including the ringbuilder), Rings will be rsync'd at a configurable interval (e.g 300s).. This is safe to do even when the rings are being modified as the current code does a temp file write plus atomic rename (If it is desired to sync the builder files too then their 'save' function would need to use this sane logic instead of writing to them directly). Does this sound like something that would be good in the main Swift code? Let me know and I'll setup Gerrit if so! Regards Mark

[Glance][Image Encryption] Problem with data-migration in db

Hi, I am currently trying to implement the upgrade path for the image encryption in Glance. VM fails to start in OpenSUSE for aarch64

To whom it may concern I tried to use OpenSUSE aarch64 VM in OpenStack environment but failed. Do you know how to solve one of the following two problems? I look forward to your reply. 1. VM startup of OpenSUSE for OpenStack on ARM fails When I deployed a VM in an OpenStack environment using OpenSUSE 15.1 for OpenStack on ARM, the VM was successfully created but failed to start. When I checked the console log from the browser, it seems that the OS boot process is not completed. What could be the cause of this? Hello I am stuck for days on network setup issues and would be grateful if you could provide any pointer on how best to proceed. We have an existed vlan based network. I would like to set up the openstack to be vlan based, that is, each project would be on a separate vlan. To achieve this, I went about doing this: - Converted the port connected to neutron_external_interface to trunk on the HP switch. Hello Stackers, Milestone-3 of the 2024.2 ("Dalmatian") release cycle is upon us this week [1]. This milestone marks several code freeze deadlines. It's the feature freeze across all OpenStack projects that follow the "cycle-with-rc" release model [2], as well as a client library code freeze and a freeze for the global requirements and constraints. Please refer to Thierry Carrez (ttx)'s email regarding the release team's priorities for this week [3]. Alongside these significant release events, we're also wrapping up the nomination period for the combined PTL/TC Elections for the 2025.1 release cycle on 2024-08-28. If you have been considering nominating yourself for any of these leadership roles, please do not delay any further [4]. I'd like to congratulate the three Outreachy interns who successfully completed their internships this week. I encourage you to read about their experiences through their blogs. We focused most of this meeting on the implications of testing/shipping non-OSI licensed software within OpenStack. There was consensus that the current TC guidance regarding shipping binary artifacts [8] needs to be extended. A suggestion was made to disallow bundling non-OSI-compatible licensed software within binaries built, tested, and/or shipped/hosted on community infrastructure. We also discussed the need for a policy around reacting to integrated software whose licensing changes to a non-OSI-compatible license over time. This discussion gained prominence due to the Kolla project looking to ship a container image for the Masakari service that recently began supporting the use of HashiCorp's Consul [9]. Consul is one of several HashiCorp "open source" projects licensed under a "Business Source License" [10]. This was a very interesting discussion that involved a lot of questions; I recommend reading through the meeting log for the complete context [11]. Further policy discussion was tabled for an upcoming forum/PTG session with a wider audience.
