[nova] Enabling UEFI for BFV instances

Hi everyone, I’m working on an open source tool right now which can do online migration of VMware instances to OpenStack. It uses VDDK and some other neat pieces of open source technology (nbdkit, libnbd, virt-v2v). It’s working great so far and I have a few challenges before release. When migrating a VM that was using UEFI in VMware, the VM will not boot inside OpenStack because it needs `hw_machine_type` to be set to `uefi`. However, the way that I’m doing migrations, I’m mounting a volume inside a migration “appliance VM” and copying data into it (to make it generic enough to work with all backends). Is there a way we can mark a volume as UEFI bootable by any chance so that Nova picks it up? Thanks, Mohammed

Hey there! We would very much like to allow multiple objects in the same bucket to have multiple storage policies, different from their container. Since we noticed that this is not possible now, we'd like to take a shot at it. But first, any suggestions or ideas on implementing this? The idea we are following here and trying to implement would be to use the same logic as the `+segments` bucket: each bucket would have a `+cold` counterpart, in the cold storage policy, which would store such objects, and we would keep a manifest/symlink in the original bucket, which we can use to retrieve the content from cold storage. Just as a piece of context, we are basing this solution on yoga release and using S3 apis mainly. Thanks for the help! Rafael

[CloudKitty] query regarding ElasticSearch usage

Hello OpenStack community and users of CloudKitty! There have been some discussions in our bi-weekly meetings and vPTG meetings regarding the deprecation and removal of ElasticSearch support as a storage backend. Therefore, this e-mail is to consult/query users regarding ElasticSearch users. If there are no people using it anymore with CloudKitty, we are considering the alternative of removing it and maintaining only the OpenSearch support. We would like to hear back from you guys. Let me know if you are using ElasticSearch, and if you intend to stick with it. Also, do you guys feel the need to improve something in its support in CloudKitty. Hello, We are presently in the process of enhancing the official OpenStack-Helm documentation by including a procedural guide for deploying Tacker using helmchart. Through discussions with members of the openstack-helm community, it has been emphasized that Barbican is an indispensable component for Tacker. Hence, it would be highly beneficial for users to have comprehensive instructions for installing Barbican with helmchart included in the official OpenStack-Helm documentation [1]. Consequently, we suggest that the Barbican community integrate the installation guide for the Barbican component into the official OpenStack-Helm documentation. This addition is poised to significantly enhance the clarity and accessibility of deployment procedures for users. [nova] Cannot (live)migrate due to host mismatch?

Hello, When I try to live migrate a VM and specify a target host, I am getting the following: $ openstack server migrate <id> --live --os-compute-api-version 2.30 --host hypervisor-05 No valid host was found. There are not enough hosts available. (HTTP 400) (Request-ID: req-bee8f8b1-7218-4ae7-aa71-c4e5a3a84ba5) And the following is logged in nova-scheduler: No hosts matched due to not matching requested destination (hypervisor-05, hypervisor-05.sub.domain.com) When I do "openstack hypervisor list" I see my hypervisors with its fqdn (hypervisor-05.sub.domain.com). So, it might be a mismatch in the nova database? How do I verify and correct it?

I have configured the following in ceph.conf rgw keystone api version = 3 rgw keystone url = https://keystone/v3 rgw keystone admin project = service rgw keystone admin domain = default rgw keystone service token enabled = true rgw keystone accepted roles = member, _member_, admin, swiftoperator rgw keystone implicit tenants = true rgw enable apis = swift, s3 rgw s3 auth use keystone = true but I'm getting the following error when creating a container > openstack container create test Unauthorized (HTTP 401) Does anyone what I'm missing? Dear All, I'm evaluating Masakari for instance HA and I need to install it using openstack-ansible. I'm doing it initially in a small test cluster (3 controller, and 3 compute). [devstack][packstack] Quick install of OpenStack Ussuri

Hi, I was planning on taking the COA exam, and as it's still tested on the Ussuri release I wanted to create a local install to get used to the differences with current releases. I have tried with PackStack but there seem to be some never fixed bug with Galera setup, and with PackStack I wasn't able to make it work on any "supported" OS [bionic|stretch|jessie|f30|f31|opensuse-15.2|opensuse-tumbleweed|rhel8] (either the Python version is too old, or packages install is not supported on EL8, or repositories have been taken down etc etc...) Are there any pre-configured VMs that can be used for training? Or does anyone know on which OS (outside of the ones before) could a Ussuri setup with Devstack run? Using RDMA in OpenStack managed virtual machines

Hello, community, I would like to ask about best practices for using infiniband and RoCEv2 for openstack managed virtual machines. I am a newbie to this area so any information is appreciated. The use case right now is basically for training/inferencing deep learning applications, for example connecting to parallel filesystem through RDMA (IB/RoCEv2). I've done a very basic search through the internet and found mainline code provides sriov-agent which could do basic VF passthrough. There is also a project named mellanox-networking which looks like it could handle IB but seems not to be updated since Train release. All of the above mentioned codes, seems to not handle switches/routers which in my opinion is not complete (at least for RoCEv2, seems PFC/ECN etc should configure switch). How to get an empty file /etc/resolv.conf ?

When creating a virtual machine, entries like "search openstacklocal" or "domain openstacklocal" always appear in the /etc/resolv.conf file. I want that after creating any virtual machine in the file /file the lines “search openstacklocal” or “domain openstacklocal” were missing. I found a way to change these lines, but my goal is completely missing them. How can this be implemented? Which function needs to be fixed and where? I use Openstack train

Hello OpenStack-Ansible team, We are students in Germany studying Business Informatics. Currently, we have a project where we need to build an OpenStack environment using Kolla-Ansible. Our goal is to use Gnocchi and CloudKitty to gather metrics on the usage of the VMs in OpenStack. We tried following the official Kolla-Ansible deployment guide but encountered issues starting Kolla-Ansible, as shown in the attached screenshots. Could you possibly help us? Hello, AFAIK live migration requires to have /var/lib/nova/instances shared between the compute nodes (eg. through a NFS export)- If this has not been configured initially and each compute node has its own folder, is it possible to merge them somehow without disruptive effects? The periodic workers are currently not executed when the WSGI module is configured when using the ML2/OVS mechanism driver (ML2/OVS is still under development). [openstack-ansible][release] Delayed 2024.1 (Caracal) Trailing release

Hi folks, As you might have noticed, the final release for 2024.1 (Caracal) is being delayed now for over a week. This has happened due to finding a couple of nasty bugs during more thorough testing of the upgrade path from Antelope by our community members, which happened after RC1 was published. Currently we are on track and known issues was fixed. We are waiting now for SHA bumps to land for the final RC3 which will be used as a 29.0.0 tag. I do hope that it will be done by the end of this week. Sorry for the inconveniences.

Hello Stackers, We're two weeks away from milestone-2 of the 2024.2 (Dalmatian) release cycle [1]. Milestone-2 is a checkpoint to assess the status of inactive project teams and the release worthiness of their deliverables. As I shared with you last week, Dr. Jens Harbott (frickler) made progress on cleaning up maintainers for OpenStack packages on PyPI. He dropped 207 human maintainers across 146 PyPI packages [2]. I'll follow up in the next few weeks about other progress we'll make in this area. === Weekly Meeting === The last weekly IRC meeting was well attended. We chatted about making changes to our PyPI audit scripts. With as much as we're able to automate around the interface, there are some packages we have identified where we need OpenStack CI to assume ownership/maintenance from individuals. We also highlighted Zuul configuration errors [3]; we'll focus on addressing these and gate stability in the coming weeks. If you are a project maintainer, your help in fixing these broken CI job configurations in your project is most welcome! We then briefly touched upon the extensive discussions on removing Eventlet from OpenStack and migration efforts. These discussions have prompted a rewrite of the goal, and we should hear more about this soon. Jay Faulkner (JayF) provided an update on the successful OpenInfra Days event at CERN.
