OpenInfra Foundation staff update, June 2025
Hi everyone, Since we are not having an OpenInfra Foundation Board meeting this month, I wanted to provide an OpenInfra Foundation staff update via email as there are many initiatives making progress right now. I want to specifically call out a deadline that is the most important, which is the enrollment of OpenInfra Member organizations in the Linux Foundation. Not only will this impact the eligibility of OpenInfra members moving forward, it also significantly impacts the formation of the initial OpenInfra Foundation Governing Board, which is going to be seated early July. Several of your organizations have not completed the enrollment process; the participation agreement must absolutely be signed before June 30to ensure that your 2025 OIF membership can transfer to the new organization without any lapse. The enrollment process is accessible here <https://enrollment.lfx.linuxfoundation.org/?project=openinfra-foundation>.If you do not know your status, please contact Jimmy McArthur at jimmy@openinfra.dev <mailto:jimmy@openinfra.dev>or anyone on the Foundation staff. The rest of the staff update includes LF transition progress and updates organized by the 2025 OpenInfra Foundation goals, including several OpenInfra Summit updates (CFP closes this week!) and ongoing community and marketing initiatives. * LF Progress o As Jonathan previously communicated, the final documents were signed and the deal was closed on June 1st. All of the OpenInfra Foundation staff has successfully transferred to the Linux Foundation and begun onboarding. o The OpenInfra member organizations transition is around 40% complete. It is critical that your organizations complete this process as soon as possible. If you have concerns about the June 30 timeline or questions, please let us know ASAP. The enrollment process can be accessed here <https://enrollment.lfx.linuxfoundation.org/?project=openinfra-foundation>. o Last week, Jonathan posted a blog <https://openinfra.org/blog/openinfra-joins-linux-foundation>providing an update on the LF transition to the OpenInfra community. In the upcoming weeks, additional announcements will be made through the Linux Foundation around Mark and Jonathan’s roles, and I will post my vision specifically for the OpenInfra Foundation and how it fits into this larger strategy on the OpenInfra blog. We will let you all know once these are live. o The inaugural OpenInfra Foundation Governing Board meeting will happen early July. It will cover the initial setup steps, including confirming the 2025 budget for the rest of the year. * Increasing Financial Resilience o Since May 1, the OpenInfra Foundation has added one new Platinum Member, Cachengo, as well as two new Silver members. We have already begun working more closely with the Linux Foundation Sales Team to further accelerate OpenInfra member growth. o AWS donation toward OpenStack’s OpenSearch log cluster has been renewed for 2026 (a $40,000 value). This service <https://governance.openstack.org/sigs/tact-sig.html#opensearch>collects CI job results in one searchable place, so OpenStack developers can filter them by time or other criteria, see simple visualization for most common errors etc. o OpenInfra Summit Europe <https://summit2025.openinfra.org/>sponsorships are progressing well and the team has already exceeded 75% of the sponsorship revenue goal. There is an initial deadline of this Friday, June 13 to sign up as a Summit sponsor to be included in the schedule announcement later this month. The final deadline to sign up as a sponsor is September 26. o Earlier this year, the OpenInfra marketing team initiated targeted marketing collaboration specifically around VMware migration, but have also recently piloted other targeted marketing opportunities that OpenInfra Members can sign up for. If your team is interested and would like to explore options, please reach out to Allison Price. These have also been shared with the marketing teams for all OpenInfra Foundation members. * Sustaining OpenStack Resurgence o Next week, the OpenInfra Member VMware Migration Working Group is publishing an extensive migration guide to further educate the growing market of organizations who are seeking virtualization alternatives to VMware. There will be extensive promotion around this ecosystem collaboration which includes several production case studies and reference architectures. The paper will be available here <https://www.openstack.org/vmware-migration-to-openstack>. o Members of the OpenInfra Foundation staff attended KubeCon Hong Kong this week, and will be attending KubeCon Japan next week, meeting with the community and press to continue elevating the OpenInfra blueprint, recruiting new OpenInfra members, and meeting fellow LF team members. o The OpenStack User Survey <http://openstack.org/usersurvey>is open and will be closing in August for annual analysis. Please encourage your teams and customers to complete the survey as this adoption data is critical to communicating the health of the OpenStack project and market opportunity. o The OpenInfra Foundation team is working with Forrester on finalizing a report specifically around the VMware migration market opportunity and exploring options with other analyst groups on the overall OpenStack market and projections for its economic value in the coming years. We will keep you posted as both of these efforts progress. * Raising Foundation and Project Visibility o The OpenInfra Summit CFP closes this Friday, June 13 at 11:59pm PST. We have already recruited some European user talks including the United Nations and Les Restos du Coeur, a well-known French charity organization who will deliver a keynote about how open infrastructure results in more meals served for those in need, that I am personally very excited about. Please encourage your teams to submit their sessions <https://summit2025.openinfra.org/cfp>and workshops by this deadline. The community-led programming committee will begin working on the selection process immediately so we can publish the official schedule by the end of June. o The first OpenInfra Summit Europe registration price increase will occur on July 2. Ticket prices will double, so please encourage your teams to register by then to secure the early bird price of €60. o The OpenInfra Edge Computing Working Group is publishing a white paper in early July: Next Generation Edge—Edge Computing Architectures for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Use Cases. o The OpenInfra marketing team will be publishing a call to action encouraging the OpenInfra project communities and OpenInfra Members to submit case studies, tutorials and community progress updates to the project blogs, OpenInfra blog, and Superuser. This effort is to maximize the reach of the OpenInfra Foundation, projects, Members, and community efforts. * Meet OpenInfra Staff in person o June 16-19: Jonathan, Mark, and I are attending KubeCon Japan (Tokyo) o June 23-25: Ildikó and Allison are attending Open Source Summit NA (Denver) o June 27: Horace and Mark are attending AICon (Beijing) o July 3: Jimmy is attending Cloud Operator Days Tokyo o July 28: Jimmy is attending OpenInfra Days Vietnam (Hanoi) o July 12: Kendall is attending Open Source Contribution Academy (Seoul) o July 31-August 3: Ildikó is attending FOSSY (Portland) o August 25-27: Ildikó and I will be attending Open Source Summit EU (Amsterdam) o August 26: Jimmy is attending OpenInfra Days Korea (Seoul) Lots of collaboration opportunities ahead!
