Fellow community members, The Foundation board meeting <https://board.openinfra.org/meetings/2025-04-08> today discussed some potential changes to the OpenInfra AI Generated Content Policy <https://openinfra.org/legal/ai-policy> that we adopted as a community almost a year ago. For the OpenStack projects at least (these just happen to be the ones I looked at), the current usage of the "Generated-By:" label in landed commit messages is vanishingly low. After some discussion with individual contributors on why it isn't being more widely used, it seems that the tab-completion/predictive style of AI tool usage isn't always well described by the "Generated-By:" label. The suggestive style of tool usage seems to be most prevalent in reality, whereas generating *entire* code artifacts via progressively refined prompts seems to be less common. Contributors may be reluctant to grant co-authorship "credit" to an AI when the code suggested by the tool was subsequently heavily reworked by them, and/or only constituted only a small fraction of the LOCs in the patch series. So the idea has been floated to augment the policy with a further label that has a softer connotation, perhaps "Assisted-By:" or something of that nature. That change might only need to impact a single section of the policy[1]. The goal here would simply be to make it more likely that any usage of AI tools to co-create community code is accurately reflected in our commit messages. We will likely spin up a working group or subcommittee of the board to discuss the proposed policy revision. We will also check what other FOSS communities are doing, since the current "Generated-By:" label was originally inspired by the Apache Software Foundation generative tooling guidance <https://www.apache.org/legal/generative-tooling.html>.
