+1, I would've also preferred a single pane as well.  One possible way I
could see it being done would be to leave the keyboard shortcuts intact and
change the list of sessions that is currently on the right pane to a
drop-down list instead?

I did a similar exercise,  the main reason I did it was to be able to
compare metrics/attributes for the sessions in our track and to be able to
sort the data as well.  The ability to select a metric/attribute and then
be able to generate a list view sorted by that attribute/metric would
eliminate my personal needs for a spreadsheet.  If this is too complex then
adding an export option for tracks might be a good option as well.

I would also prefer an option to remove/delete prior comments on a
session.  We use comments for different purposes in the various phases and
the ability to clear comments (not automatically though) would be good to
help track chairs remove prior comments (e.g. someone might have said "+1"
to keep a talk in their track and in the selection phase that "+1" could
seem confusing).
