[Openstack-security] Elections for OSSG lead

Hi Cody,

I think you’d probably make a great leader of the OSSG, it takes a big commitment, I’ve just announced my candidacy – I was waiting because I wanted others to announce if they were interested without the incumbent being in the way.

To add to Bryan’s list, the overall direction stuff is hard, requires a lot of politicking behind the scenes, a good example of that is how I have had to fight in the past to have a separate security track at the summit or how we have built up our reputation with the VMT and now consult regularly on vulnerability reports.

There’s lots of trying to bring organisations into the fold, trying to get cooperation at a high lever (more FTE towards security, OSSG etc) but that’s getting better over time with more organisations recognising what the OSSG is trying to accomplish.

In general you can take it wherever you want I suppose that’s part of the virtue of it but also the risk. I’m happy to expand on any specific tasks or points below :)

Cheers

-Rob

Fair question. Perhaps Rob can provide some details as he is the current lead?

I have also served in this role (in an unelected capacity!) in the past. I found the lead position to take a fair amount of time... perhaps 5-10 hours per week. Tasks include:

- setting the overall direction for the group and making that vision a reality

- running the weekly IRC meetings

- coordinating with the team leads to ensure work is progressing (this currently includes OSSN, book, and threat modeling)

- coordinating mid-cycle meetups

- advocating for security throughout the openstack community (mailing list, conference talking slots, etc)

- serving as a liaison to the VMT

I'm probably missing some things too. I'll let Rob fill in the remaining details :-)

Cheers,

-bryan

Is there a page that lists the responsibilities of said lead? I think it'd be helpful to understand the time commitment involved so one could weigh it against other responsibilities and commitments.

Just a reminder that this Sunday is the last day to announce your candidacy for the OSSG Lead position. As of today, we have zero candidates, but I know that there are people who are interested. Please go ahead and add your name to the list!

Cheers,

Hi All,

It gives me great pleasure to open the election process for OSSG leadership.

This is the second time the OSSG has had the opportunity to elect leadership since the OSSG began nearly three years ago. The term for this position will begin at the Kilo Summit in Paris (November 2014) and end at the 'L' Summit in Vancouver (May 2015). The elected leader will be responsible for holding a new election to fill the OSSG Lead position for the following term. There are no term limits (an individual may be re-elected as many times as the community chooses).

Any member of the election electorate (see wiki for details) can propose his/her candidacy for the same election. No nomination is required. They do so by sending an email to the openstack-security at lists.openstack.org <mailto:openstack-security at lists.openstack.org> mailing-list, using the subject: "OSSG Lead Candidacy". The email may include a description of the candidate platform. The candidacy is then confirmed by one of the election officials, after verification of the electorate status of the candidate.

Please read more at the wiki entry here: http://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/Security/OSSG_Lead_Election_Fall_2014

Thank you all for being a part of the community and good luck to all the candidates!

-Rob
