hello folks,

tl;dr TryStack project is looking for a way to manage the members of the
trials. The infra team is looking for alternatives to Facebook group.

During the infra team meeting yesterday there was a discussion about the
future of TryStack. Anne Gentle summarized:

The goal for TryStack is to use donated hardware and admin resources to
give people a chance to try OpenStack as cloud consumers/devs.

Originally Facebook was the starting point for user access, with the
intention to move it to something more integrated with our
infrastructure. A blueprint exists[1].

A kerfluffle came up last week where Facebook wanted a privacy policy in
place for what happens with user info for a group. It is my
understanding that the app used to manage users in TryStack is now in a
non-functional state.

Facebook at the moment provides TryStack with:

     1. Group member management (CRUD, remove)
     2. Ensure real identities, not bots or spammers
     3. Enable group communication with users

Since the Facebook app is not working we debated the options.
I believe that #3 group communication is easily solved via Ask OpenStack
(it provides embeddable widgets, too) and mailing lists we already have.
So the real issues to solve are #1 and #2, plus issue #0

     0. Migrate the > 8,000 existing members of FB trystack group

At the meeting we debated which authentication mechanism to replace
Facebook with. The options are:

     a. use Launchpad and its ID: fully integrated with other OpenStack
projects, it provides #1 with group management and it's fairly good at
#2 too.
     b. something like Ask, with support to multiple providers: more
flexible, but requires implementing spam prevention and CRUD/remove
capabilities
     c. keep Facebook as is, improve the app writing the privacy policy.
     d. don't do anything (or do c.) and wait for a unified
authentication mechanism based on the OpenStack Foundation members
database to become a general ID provider for the project

The meeting didn't provide enough time to come to a conclusion. I'm
posting this recap to continue the conversation on the list. I'll state
my opinion in a separate message.
