In case anyone is interested in the details, I went through the exercise of a basic bringup of Istio on Magnum k8s (with stable/pike):  https://tiswanso.github.io/istio/istio_on_magnum.html

I hope to update with follow-on items that may also be explored, such as:
- Istio automatic side-car injection via adding the k8s admission controller during cluster create
- Add Raw VM app to istio service-mesh
