And, of course, writing tests that demonstrate some of those more difficult open bugs would help make sure they don't resurface once fixed ;-)  so, if you can't get a handle yet on the intricacies of the the code that contains the issue, you still might be able to demonstrate the breakage and get kudos for that.

At least, I'd give you kudos for that!

Indeed, as Jay already mentioned, we have a competitions for easier bugs right now :) Please keep in mind, though, that carefully reviewing others patches is often more valuable, than adding more patches to the queue. This may be a good way to both help the project and learn it better.
